2010 Outreach and 5K a success!
For the second year, Cedar Lake and Louisville Collegiate School held our Partnership Outreach 5K run/walk. The event was held on Saturday, May 8, and the 5K and 1-mile Fun Run began at twilight (6 p.m.) in the Historic Cave Hill Cemetery on Grinstead Drive across from Collegiate. The race course followed the lovely landscape of hills and lakes surrounded by trees, waterfowl and family memorials, and finished on the Louisville Collegiate campus. Students helped to raise more than $15,000 in sponsorships and gifts!
Our top sponsors for the event were: Kosair Children's Medical Center Brownsboro; Thorntons; Whole Foods Market; Bob Evans Restaurant; Havana Rumba Cuban Restaurant; Mojito Tapas Restaurant; In Honor of José Hardy; Dairy Queen; Louisville Water Co.; Triangle Talent - Sound Decision DJ's; Shiraz Mediterranean Grill; USI Insurance, and Cave Hill Cemetery.
The event brought in 250 total participants and more than 70 volunteers. Our 5K race winners were: Male 1st Place, Benjamin Wolff; Male 2nd Place, Kevin Finnegan; Male 3rd Place, Michael Cawood; Male 4th Place, Gabriel Sharlin; Female 1st Place, Sarah Bode; Female, 2nd Place, Colleen Orr; Female 3rd Place, Kristin Ellis; and Female 4th Place, Mollie Prince. The Cedar Lake Partnership Challenge Outreach promotes an alliance with a local school. The project, launched during the 2006-07 school year, provides students with a mentored service learning opportunity that centers around interactions with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Cedar Lake partnered with Kentucky Country Day School during the project's inaugural year.
Students spent time volunteering during activities with Cedar Lake clients. They collected more than 9,000 articles of clothing during a fund-raising drive and organized and participated in holiday parties with Cedar Lake residents. The CLPC project also included classroom and on-site discussions with Cedar Lake staff. Topics included health care, disabilities, leadership, philanthropy and corporate citizenship.
