Challenge Outreach
The Cedar Lake Partnership Challenge Outreach promotes an alliance with a local school. The project, launched during the 2006-07 school year, provides students with a mentored service learning opportunity that centers around interactions with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Cedar Lake partnered with Kentucky Country Day School during the project’s inaugural year.
Students spent time volunteering during activities with Cedar Lake clients. They collected more than 9,000 articles of clothing during a fund-raising drive and organized and participated in holiday parties with Cedar Lake residents. The CLPC project also included classroom and on-site discussions with Cedar Lake staff. Topics included health care, disabilities, leadership, philanthropy and corporate citizenship.
The project culminated with the Cedar Lake 5K Invitational Partnership Challenge, held Saturday, May 12, starting at the KCD racetrack. The 5K run/walk served as the culmination of the partnership. The title sponsor was Norton Healthcare Inc.
The 5K run/walk had 340 registered participants, 50 volunteers and raised more than $25,000. Beth Copley, former KCD mom and Cedar Lake board member, is the partnership’s organizer and race coordinator.
